[threecol_two]Now that P3 is driving and has a functional air system, it was time to turn our attention towards protecting P3 from any obstacles that may threaten it’s personal space. And that means a full compliment of D and C Extreme’s own Rock Armor. You see, we knew P3 would get a beating, from its owner on the trails of Colorado, but we didn’t want it to get a beating from the trails of Colorado, especially with that near perfect body.
First thing first, our Winch bumper. Like most of our extreme buildups, Nate wanted to get into some interesting places, and he also recognized that you may not always be able to get out without some help. So a winch was first on the list.
However, to make it mount nicely, we built one of our popular winch bumpers to handle this all-to-important duty. The design is our standard, but with a few custom modifications. Like recessing it back towards the grill 2 full inches. Since the normal bumper sits as closely as it can to the grill, the only way to make P3’s bumper get 2″ closer, was to custom build it onto the frame, and that’s exactly what me did.
This provided an ultra-snug fit, and it fit perfectly. Why would we do this? Two reasons, actually three. First, the owner wanted us to. Second, the less it sticks out, the better P3’s approach angle. Third, with it welded to the frame on 3 sides, it also strengthened the frame, so when it was time to winch, it was strong enough to winch.
Next we put ‘wraparounds’ on it, these will protect the fenders from side impacts with just about anything. Then we mounted a 12,000 lb. Mile Marker Hydraulic Winch and built a small tube-structure around it. Then some clevis (a.k.a. Anchor Shackle) mounts and a little paint and there! Its done.
Next was our popular rear bumper with tire carrier, but again with some changes. Although the changes aren’t as extreme as we did to the front bumper, they are equally useful. The ‘wraparounds’ you see on the front bumper were copied (in theory) for the rear. This time to extend around and under the rear quarters from the tailgate to the rear wheel openings. After fitment the bumper was welded in place with frame extensions on the back mounts and the side ‘wraparounds’, just in case you needed to pull someone out at an angle!
The last bit we’ll cover for today is the off-road lights. We wanted to mount them as close to the driver’s eye level. This would keep those pesky shadows from creating blind spots while night driving and wheeling trips. So we mounted the lights to the windshield frame. To do it, we simply ‘modify’ a pair of our X-duty shackles, Some simple cuts, welding, drilling and wire running and it was set to enlighten our lives!
Looking pretty sweet if you ask me!
We know what you’re thinking; “That’s it for the body armor? What about the Rock Sliders?!?!” Well folks, that comes next, sort of. We tack-welded the slider mounts in place, but not the sliders. Why? Exhaust work!
